ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Margot Lee Shetterly grew up in Hampton, Virginia, where she knew mamy of the women in Hidden Figures. She is an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a Virginia Foundation for the Humanities grant for her research on women in computing. Her #1 New York Times-bestselling book tells the true story of a remarkable group of female African American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space race. The film adaptation was released in December 2016, featuring Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe, and Kevin Costner, and received several Academy Award nominations.
