How do you do it? How can I do it, too? What is the best piece of writing advice that you can give me? To kick off a week of literary inspiration, we’ll ask a panel of seasoned authors to share the wisdom they wish they had had at the beginning of their writing careers.

WRITING WITH WIT + WHIMSY

How can humor serve as a tool for giving meaning to experience? When is comedy a service or disservice to a piece of writing? Some of the top contemporary humor authors will share how and why they use laughter in their writing.

GETTING CRAFTY: TO PLOT OR NOT – SOLD OUT

How do great stories get from point A to B? In this craft-based panel, Summer Words faculty take the stage to discuss plot and pacing. From the most basic structure to the more complex, panelists will share techniques on how to move a story forward and keep the reader captivated.

THE (IM)POSSIBILITIES OF WRITING ABOUT THE SELF

No matter the genre, writers are so often inspired by their own lives and experiences. When is it impossible to write about the self, and when does it work? What parts of our lives should be included or left out of our writing? In this evening panel, Summer Words faculty will discuss how to research the “self,” to make the impossible, possible.

GETTING OUT OF THE SLUSH PILE

Top literary agents and editors will pull back the curtain on the publishing process, providing writers with useful tips for navigating the industry. From pitching a book to finding an agent and an audience, these publishing professionals will help demystify the business side of writing.
