Updates from the Pitkin County Library Renovation

By Martha Durgy, Publicity & Program Coordinator, Pitkin County Library

In early October I met with AW staffers Mo, Jamie, Caroline, and Nicole to see if our buffed and bigger library could be the venue for an important early summer Aspen Words event. Alas! A force more powerful than our library’s wishful heart, namely the completion date of our expansion and renovation, has us missing this tremendous opportunity [we look forward to others] by approximately one month. But, with the architect’s drawings spread out before us, I shared some of the features of the new library with the four AW’s. Here’s what they were most excited about:

  • the “makerspace” and creative areas with software, computers, equipment and furniture to support digital learning and craft creativity
  • a brand new community meeting room will accommodate approximately 80 people seated at tables and will be free and available for public use during and after library hours
  • small meeting rooms on every floor designed for collaboration and technology sharing
  • the expanded mezzanine housing the fiction collection with comfy reading areas and an outside reading deck
  • a quiet lower level designed for research and study
  • a café for snacking and chatting on the main floor
  • new colors, patterns, and shapes everywhere

Enough about our wonderfulness. We are dazzled once again by Aspen Words and the roster of writers arriving this winter to reward our love of stories, reading, and writing and to inspire us to keep on connecting with contemporary literature.
